The acronym SINAENCO stands for National Association of Architectural and of Consulting Engineering Companies, a business entity incorporated in 1988 and with a current list of 18.000 such firms.
SINAENCO's administrative organization reflects its nation-wide structure. Whereas the operational headquarters are in São Paulo, SP, twelve strategically located chapters (Bahia, Ceará, Espírito Santo, Goiás, Minas Gerais, Paraná, Pernambuco, Rio de Janeiro, Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina, São Paulo and Distrito Federal), autonomous in the geographical area as provided for in the by-laws, harmoniously ensure a dynamic interface with regional diversities.
Consulting Engineering switched its business concentration when Brazil began to invest in infrastructure in 1960. Before that time, the company has concentrated on civil engineering work which was provided through builders and sub-contractors of public works projects.
Advanced systems of production and the distribution of electricity in Brazil involved new technology and a need for a high degree of specialization, professional know-how and companies with offices that were able to supply specific technical capabilities. Consulting Engineering responded to the increase in demand for services and emerged with technical and administrative potential to solve the countries investment and industrial infrastructure needs.
The services offered by Consulting Engineering today include:
- Research and development of technology
- Technical and economical feasibility studies
- Basic and final engineering plans
- Procurement, technical supervision and follow-up
- Software systems
- Building and assembly supervision
- Implementation management
- Consultancy on privatization and concession of public works
- Consultancy on specific projects
- Setting up of quality programs
These services can be applied to different fields and markets such as:
- Generation, transmission and distribution of electricity
- Gas and oil
- Alternative energy resources
- Water supply
- Irrigation and drainage
- Sanitation and pollution control
- Industrial utilities
- Control systems
Thanks to its pioneering posture in looking for daring, unorthodox solutions, Brazilian architecture has earned worldwide recognition since the forties. The architect was then a solo player, his name and personal reputation an easily identifiable asset of paramount importance in the market place.
This situation, which lasted for the next two decades, started to change in response to the boom of public works and industrial development projects that marked the seventies. In order to cope with the new challenges, the heretofore individually-centered offices gradually became the well- structured firms of today, focusing on a multidisciplinary approach. Such sophistication has enabled them to take on projects of increasingly larger dimensions and more demanding technological requirements. Having therefore so much in common with their consulting engineering counterparts - in fact working in close cooperation with them - it was only natural that architectural companies joined SINAENCO, thus contributing to strengthen the synergy of both professional areas.
